Unfortunately we aren't here to talk about armored polar bears but instead the materials that make a difference.
What's It Made Of?
We talk a lot about the durability of our products and this is a direct result of the materials we use. Two of the main components of our Tonneau Cover and Tunnel Tray are UHMW plastic and powder coated aluminum.
What’s UHMW All About?
Ultra High Molecular Weight (UHMW) polyethylene might seem like a mouthful, but it’s basically a super-tough plastic. Here’s why it’s a big deal:
-
Built to Last: UHMW is incredibly resistant to wear and tear. If you’re dealing with stuff that gets a lot of friction or abrasion, like conveyor belts or machinery parts, UHMW is your friend.
-
Smooth Operator: It has a super low friction surface, meaning things slide over it really easily. This helps reduce wear on other parts and makes things run more efficiently.
-
Impact Resistant: Drop it, hit it, or bang it—UHMW can take it. It’s great for environments where things get rough, like construction sites or heavy machinery.
-
Chemical Resistance: It’s also pretty resistant to chemicals, so it won’t break down easily if it’s exposed to acids or solvents.
-
Easy to Clean: Its non-porous surface doesn’t trap dirt or grime, making maintenance a breeze.
- Recycled: The UHMW we use is a blend of virgin and recycled plastic. Just a step in our efforts to minimize our environmental impact.
Powder Coated Aluminum: Looks Good, Long lasting
Powder-coated aluminum combines the lightweight strength of aluminum with a sleek, protective finish. Here’s what’s cool about it:
-
Tough Finish: The powder coating adds an extra layer of protection against scratches, corrosion, and UV damage. It’s perfect for outdoor stuff or anything that needs to withstand the elements.
-
Color Choices: You can get powder coating in pretty much any color or finish you want. But for our purposes to paraphrase Henry Ford - any color you want as long as it's black!
-
Low Maintenance: Unlike paint, powder coating won’t chip or peel easily. It’s durable and easy to clean, so it’ll keep looking good with minimal upkeep.
-
Eco-Friendly: Powder coating is better for the environment than traditional paints because it doesn’t involve harmful solvents and produces less waste.
-
Cost-Effective: It might cost a bit more upfront, but the durability and low maintenance make it a smart investment for both us and our customers in the long run.
Next week witches, polar bears and zeppelins!
