Over the weekend we headed to Cleveland to check out the Slate Auto EV in person. We went in curious. We left… scheming.
Here’s the thing: most automakers treat their vehicles like locked gardens. Sure, they’ll sell you “official” accessories, but the message is clear - don’t touch. Don’t tweak. Don’t even think about aftermarket mods unless you enjoy voided warranties and angry dealership techs.
Slate gives the total opposite impression. They built an EV that practically dares you to customize it. Slate University will have entire video libraries showing owners how to apply wraps, add modules, and tailor the truck to their needs. They embrace the idea that a vehicle should evolve with you. They’re not just okay with DIY, they’re nudging you toward it.
That’s the kind of philosophy that gets us excited. It’s the same reason we started building our own gear for the Rivian R1T. When you hand people a platform that’s easy to tinker with, the aftermarket blooms. New ideas come to life. You don’t just get a truck, you get a... well you get a blank slate...
We’re not announcing anything, but standing next to that Slate EV made it easy to imagine our shop corner piled with fresh prototypes. Manual tonneau covers? Custom grilles? Camp-friendly add-ons? All fair game.
And speaking of tonneaus, we asked Slate directly about their plans. Their accessories team is still designing their own version. Which means there may be room for an Interrobang take on a Slate tonneau.
So, should we?
