The Interrobang Automotive Story
Makers — DIY problem-solvers who bring innovative ideas to life — are the heart of Interrobang Automotive, starting with our founder, Bill Fitts. After his long-awaited Rivian R1T finally shipped with no option for a tonneau cover in sight, Bill began talking to others in the Rivian community facing the same challenges.
The R1T was his very first truck — he wanted to protect his investment, as well as the gear he needed to stow when camping and hiking. The lifelong maker, avid outdoorsman and former chef needed a rugged, durable solution. Eventually, he designed one in his home workshop.
From Bill’s Garage to B.F. Goodrich Company's Birthplace
Bill shared his aftermarket aluminum tonneau design with fellow R1T owners and enthusiasts across Rivian Stories, Rivian Forums and Reddit’s r/Rivian. He also shared the plans to help other DIYers make their own truck bed covers. Soon, Rivian owners were asking him to build aftermarket tonneau covers for their R1Ts, too. He used their feedback to continue tweaking the design.
As he refined the product and demand increased, he brought on a core crew of fellow creators (we’re currently 4 in total!) and moved operations to the former B.F. Goodrich rubber plant, now called Canal Place, in the center of Akron, Ohio.
Our production space is one of historic innovation. At one time, it was the largest rubber factory on the planet. The first spacesuit was made here, the first pneumatic tire, the first rubber-wound golf ball. Now, Canal Place is home to several new manufacturing pioneers and their products, including Interrobang’s powder-coated aluminum R1T manual tonneau cover— prized by customers for its solid construction, ease of use and superior fit.
What Sets Us Apart
We’re as passionate about engineering excellence as we are about upgrading your Rivian adventure. We only offer products we use ourselves. Interrobang Automotive stands behind the sleek fit and rugged quality of our American-made aftermarket truck bed covers, as well the crossbar mounts, organizers and other products featured on our site.
“Our ethos is to make things that make sense,” Bill said. “Sometimes, the hardest thing to do is to make something that is simple and sturdy and to the point.”
